An Introduction to the Early Works Contractors

High speed rail construction works to start in Euston

HS2 Ltd has appointed Costain Skanska Joint Venture (CSJV) as the Enabling Works Contractor. The HS2 Enabling Works Contract covers 26.8 km from Euston in the London Borough of Camden to Ickenham in the London Borough of Hillingdon. It involves preparatory activities which will enable Main Works Contractors to construct tunnels, vents shafts, bridges and other structures along the route of the HS2 railway.

Summary of upcoming works CSJV will be responsible for delivering a range of enabling works including, but not limited to, utility diversions, ecology surveys, archaeology, site clearance and demolition works, works on highways, as well as environmental monitoring. These will take around five years to complete. Works in the Euston area will include the following activities:

  • From mid-April, representatives from CSJV will start to contact residents who live in areas which will be impacted by HS2 construction noise and where residents are eligible for noise insulation.
  • We will carry out ecology and archaeological surveys within St James Gardens and Euston Square Gardens, and will begin some tree cutting from mid-summer.
  • From September, we will dig trial holes to investigate the location and type of utilities beneath the ground.
  • From May until December, we will carry out demolition surveys. We will then secure relevant buildings and remove all fixtures and fittings in preparation for demolition.
  • From late 2017, we will demolish buildings along the north and western side of Euston Station. This will mean that noise insulation will be needed in some properties in this area. We will develop a more detailed programme of demolition works and make this available when possible.
  • CSJV working with the community

Whilst we carry out these works we will be mindful of the impact on the local community and are committed to reducing disruption where possible. We will keep the community up to date with activities well in advance of the works starting and be happy to discuss any queries or suggestions you may have.

In addition to our construction activities, we have begun contacting organisations and businesses in your area to discuss how we can work within the community to focus our investment activities and employment opportunities to benefit local people.

This approach is core to our beliefs and offers opportunities for everyone to be included and benefit. If you would like further information relating to any CSJV activities, please contact the HS2 Helpdesk.

Help for residents affected by construction noise

We will conduct enabling works in ways that keep noise down as much as we reasonably can. However, we know that many people in the Euston area may still be impacted. Residents in over 1,300 properties around HS2 worksites have been identified as being eligible for help under the HS2 Noise Insulation Scheme. To find out if your address is included, call the HS2 Helpdesk or visit the noise insulation page where you can click on a link to a map:

    https://hs2ineuston.commonplace.is/schemes/happening-now/noise-insulation/details

If you are eligible for the scheme you should have received a letter from HS2 Ltd. CSJV representatives will also visit eligible properties from mid-April 2017 onwards to invite those who have not yet applied for the scheme to do so. If you have a preferred means of contact please let us know via the HS2 Helpdesk: phone 08081 434 434 or email: hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk

    Special Cases

We recognise that there may be circumstances in which residents are more sensitive to construction noise. If you have any circumstances you feel we should be aware of please contact our helpdesk at HS2enquiries@hs2.org.uk or 08081 434 434 .

Special cases could include homes where noise insulation is not a viable option, night workers, people who regularly work from home and need a quiet environment, or those that may have a medical condition which will be seriously aggravated by construction noise.

In order to progress your application HS2 Ltd may require additional information from you to support the information you have provided to us. We will look after your personal information and protect your privacy at all times. We will only keep your information for as long as we need to progress it and complete your noise insulation application.
