HS2 Works Notification: Network Rail works near Mornington Terrace, from 9pm on 16 January - 5.40am on 18 January.

Network Rail would like to remind residents of upcoming work near to Mornington Terrace, from 9pm on 16 January – 5.40am on 18 January. Please see notification . Network Rail will be removing a set of points (these help to move the train from one line to another) and re-joining the track. This work will involve disconnecting the signals, cutting the track, removing the points, removing the gravel and stones that make up the railway bed (known as ballast), installing a new layer of ballast and installing pre-built track panels. The new track panels will be welded with the new ballast put on top. A tamping train is a machine that is used to compact ballast and ensure that the track is correctly aligned. One of these machines will be used at the end of work to ensure the track is at the right level. An engineering train will also be used to bring materials and waste to and from site. For the safety of staff on site, this work needs to be carried out at night when trains are not running. To minimise disruption to residents as much as possible Network Rail has planned for all materials and waste to be removed from site in one engineering train, rather than multiple trains. A rail mounted crane will also be used to lift and install the track panels. This is to reduce engineering train movements and allow Network Rail to complete this work in one weekend shift, rather than multiple weekends. Although Network Rail has planned to use machinery that will minimise disruption as much as possible, due to the nature of this work, some noise will be unavoidable. Network Rail will make every effort to reduce disturbance to residents. Staff working on site will be reminded of the importance of working considerately in the local area. Where it is safe to do so on track, they will also use acoustic barriers when cutting the rail.
