Upcoming works - St James' Gardens and DB Cargo Shed

In June 2017, Costain Skanska Joint Venture (CSJV) will start preparatory works within St James’ Gardens, Euston Square Gardens and at the DB Cargo shed off Granby Terrace Bridge. A site compound will also be established at London Zoo car park. These works are part of the clearance activities before the construction of the new High Speed station and infrastructure in Euston.

St James’ Gardens

St James’ Gardens was a burial ground until 1852. The majority of the gardens sit within the footprint of what will be the new high speed station, which means that from the end of June 2017 we will be permanently closing the gardens to the public to carry out ground investigations and site clearance works.

The gardens will be hoarded off and we will be carrying out ecology and archaeology surveys. We will be carefully excavating archaeological trial trenches to help us understand the burial population within the gardens and plan for the careful removal of the burial remains prior to their subsequent re-interment.

During these works we will only remove trees where needed to enable the archaeological investigations to be safely carried out. In the longer term, it is anticipated that the trees in the gardens will need to be removed for the construction of the station buildings, however we will continue to challenge our designers and contractors to retain trees where possible.

Heritage assets, including the gravestones and monuments within the gardens will be recorded and then removed and safely stored.

DB Cargo Shed

From early June 2017, CSJV will be carrying out non-intrusive survey and historic building recording works in the DB Cargo Shed. This will help us plan to deconstruct the shed in the safest and least disruptive way possible and investigate and record the early twentieth century railway structure.

In order to adequately secure the site we will need to remove some trees and shrubs where necessary along the Park Village East retaining wall planters.

Road closures

· Park Village East will be closed for 6 hours from 10am on 26 June and for 6 hours from 10am on 27 June (resident access will be maintained) and parking suspensions will be in place.

· Granby Terrace Bridge will be closed to traffic from 28-30 June.

· One lane and footpath on the north side of Granby Terrace Bridge will be closed long term, including parking suspensions from 28 June to May 2018.
