Works between Primrose Hill Tunnels & Granby Terrace - 13 May 2017 to 30 July 2017

What are we doing?

Over the coming months, Network Rail will continue to undertake work to prepare for building the new High Speed 2 (HS2) railway.

This work involves removing redundant overhead line equipment, minor improvement works and surveys, removing vegetation, constructing access points and safety barriers, and managing machine movements both on and off track.

In addition to these works, the removal of the DB cargo railway carriage shed will begin. This is a building on the tracks near Granby Terrace that has been used as a train maintenance depot. The first stage is to relocate electrical assets from near the railway carriage shed on the Western approach to Euston Station. This work involves delivery of materials and machinery, removal of three cabins and a lighting tower, installation of a cabling under the track pouring concrete bases for new electrical assets, and installation of trackside electrical equipment and cabling. Access to the railway for these works will be via Juniper Crescent as shown in Figure A.

We will write to you again in July to provide further updates on scheduled works. However in August we will also be carrying out essential works over the bank holiday weekend across night and day shifts. We will provide further information on these works as it becomes available.

Why do we need to undertake the work?

Network Rail is undertaking these works to allow train services to continue to run to and from Euston station during the construction of HS2.

To guarantee safety, much of this work must be carried out while trains are not running and when the overhead line is isolated. Network Rail is contractually obliged to work whenever possible at times that cause the least disruption to train services. This often means carrying out improvements mid-week, during the night and at weekends. To minimise disruption, we have scheduled these works to coincide with wider railway maintenance work at Euston.

Please be aware that these works are subject to possible cancellation or rescheduling as a result of adverse weather conditions or the requirements of the operational railway.

How will this affect me and will this be noisy?

Network Rail is working closely with HS2 Ltd and Camden Council to minimise the impact of these works. Camden Council has granted the necessary permissions for these works, with restrictions to minimise noise.

Unnecessary noise will be minimised where possible – for instance through the use of noise barriers, silenced generators, and continuous noise monitoring. For safety reasons, it is not always possible to provide acoustic noise barriers when work at height is taking place, or works trains and track mounted vehicles are moving within the work area, where statutory rail industry safety warnings such as train horns and vehicle alarms are mandatory. Installation of temporary lighting is also required to give adequate and safe lighting levels for staff working at night and during overcast weather conditions.

All staff and contractors are regularly briefed on working responsibly in the local community.
